What’s in your workout closet?
What’s in your workout closet?
There was a mad rush a few weeks ago to purchase workout equipment: Pelotons, weight sets & all the gizmos. Then, the rush of the waterbottle & bodyweight workouts on social media, then push up & balance challenges. This week, I’m seeing puzzles, puppies & a lot fewer workouts.
Why?
As much as I hate to say it, this is going to be a long haul. The last few weeks have felt like New Year’s Day at the gym, & let’s face it, we’ve moved on to February & we’re making cloth masks instead of making workout plans.
I’m guilty too. I’d been eyeing some weight plates, dumbbells & fitness bars for a few months and decided to pull the trigger when it looked like I wasn’t going to be able to go to the gym anymore. I’ve gotten in a workout & run each week but the motivation has been hard.
Last weekend it hit me.
I needed help.
With the changes of the past 3 weeks, I’ve been sitting a lot more than normal (no walking the kids to/from school and sitting more for virtual telehealth sessions). There seems like more legos to pick up, I’m cooking & cleaning more & my body hasn’t been feeling very strong.
I decided to ask for help. (Yes, I’m allowed, too!) This is one of those times when I can devote my brain full force towards something or someone else without issue, but when it comes to my own problems, my brain turns into mush.
I hired a virtual friend, who I respect greatly, to put some workout programming together for me focused on where I’ve identified (for a while now) could use some extra attention. I had my first workout yesterday. At first glance, it looked too basic. I was skeptical. I was wrong. It was exactly what I needed.
This time feels in some ways like the first months of postpartum all over again. My body is not where I last left off in the gym or where I am in my head. It needs a little more attention, some support & definitely some extra kindness. Now is definitely not the time to take on new challenges, but I can take this opportunity to ask for help from a trusted source when I know it could keep me from sliding backward & losing ground.
Sound familiar? The good news is I’m here to help and so are my fitness/healthcare colleagues & friends. You don’t have to do this alone.
One of the best things to come out of this crisis is the acceptance of virtual care (we’ve been pushing for support here from insurance & providers for years)! Whether it’s some workout programming, tips to keep self-care focused or just a sounding board if there’s a sudden return of symptoms for what seems like no reason, that’s what we’re here for.
Hit reply if I can be of any help to you or find you a needed resource now that we’re staying at home for a bit.
Stay safe and healthy!
